Mobile working simulator

October 18th, 2007

We have added a mobile working simulator to the website that allows you to get a feel of what an AppSwing solution would look like on a mobile device, in this case Windows Mobile. While there is no data saved it does show the sort of process that is being adopted. You can run this either from a desktop browser by Clicking here or directly on your mobile device by going to http://www.appswing.com/downloads/simulator/mintro.htm

Thames Valley Innovation Conference

October 17th, 2007

Presented a couple of times at yesterdays Thames Valley Innovation Conference on topics close to my heart. Firstly on the Knowledge Transfer Partnership project we carried out in collaboration with the University of Reading. This was well received and made a bit of a star of Dan, who did the work on the project. The second presentation, on R&D in a small organisation, was the very last of the day and by this time many of the delegates had gone home and so didn’t get the audience it deserved! However, you can see the presentation below (produced in OpenOffice - simply click on the slide to move to the next one) or download a copy here.

AppSwing on an iPhone

October 8th, 2007

iPod Touch applicationsHere at AppSwing we pride ourselves on being completely device agnostic supporting any device that has a browser and some form of connection. Clearly it is also important to demonstrate this support and so this week we took the opportunity to test with an Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. While both devices worked out of the box the interface design for the on-device apps is very different to what is currently available on other devices. Therefore, we are currently looking to produce an Apple iPhone demonstration to show how you can access your back-office applications. I expect this to be online by the end of the month so watch this space for details and be one of the first to get your applications running on the iPhone.

Call Centre Expo

October 4th, 2007

I attended Call Centre Expo last week in order to check out the sector for opportunities for our AppSwing Integration Platform. There was a real mix of exhibitors there from countries highlighting their call centres and the costs that could be saved by outsourcing to companies offering to record calls and manage the process. However, the interest for AppSwing was those that were offering front office systems and need to get access to their back office applications through a standard connector. It was a good source of information and helped me shape my pitch during the day as I got more and more information. A couple of people pointed out that what I was offering sounded similar to the Microsoft Customer Care Framework. I can see why but on closer inspection they seem to be complementary.

Wimax

September 21st, 2007

A recent report from Frost & Sullivan says that xMax & Mobile WiMAX are “poised to revolutionise wireless broadband”. The problems with current systems, such as wifi, are the relatively short range, something which WiMAX are supposed to address. However, promise of this has been a long time coming but perhaps, finally, we may see some live implementations. As soon as 2008 the report suggests. Such technology upgrades are required to help push along the mobile working possibilities.

Mobile working information from Microsoft

September 19th, 2007

Just stumbled upon the following article from Microsoft on managing a mobile workforce. Not sure how old it is as there doesn’t seem to be a date on the page, however, the detail is interesting as it is looking at the management of the mobile workforce rather than the devices or applications. This seems to me to be an overlooked aspect of mobility.

IT managers concerned about mobile security

September 12th, 2007

Interesting blog regarding a survey of CIOs and their attitudes to mobile working. It seems that they are concerned about things such as sensitive data being held on the device. This is something AppSwing have been saying for a while and the only safe way forward is to have nothing reside on the device at all - you simply view a copy of the data that is held securely behind your corporate firewall.

Thames Valley Innovation Conference

August 31st, 2007

This October AppSwing will be taking part in the Thames Valley Innovation Conference, an event for businesses, innovators, advisors and investors looking to pick up new ideas, learn about new approaches to innovation and hear from innovation leaders. Over 600 delegates are expected to attend, drawn from innovative or technology companies.

I attended last year as a delegate and there were some really interesting sessions so I am looking forward to being part of it in 2007. This year AppSwing will have a stand in the Innovation Showcase where we will be demonstrating AppSwing Design Studio publicly for the first time. This is a drag and drop tool that allows partners to quickly create mobile interfaces from existing applications.

I will also be presenting a couple of times during the day. Firstly to talk about the recently completed KTP project and the impact that has had on the business and secondly about R&D in a small business.

The event is free so if you are interested in seeing some innovative companies, including AppSwing, register now.
You can download the conference flyer from here.

Opportunities in India

August 29th, 2007

It seems that the market for mobile working in India is looking pretty compelling after Nokia announced that it is now it’s second biggest market (by sales) beating even the US. The largest market though is China.
