AppSwing Summer Do 2007

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Each year AppSwing has a summer event for all the employees and their families. It’s a chance to relax and unwind, although that was more difficult this year as the gathering included five children under five! Still easier than next year I suspect when there will be seven under five! Of course the kids were the centre of attention and that is reflected in the pictures of the event. Next year we hope the sun will shine and we can get outdoors and play some games.

For people on the move

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

For people on the moveA good friend of mine, Jim Bamber, is a renowned cartoonist specialising in all things motorsport. You can see his work in Autosport magazine every week. So when I wanted someone to do a cartoon for a tee shirt we were having produced Jim was the ideal candidate.

Jim was given a very loose brief. I knew I wanted something jokey and eye catching based on a theme of mobility. The design Jim came up with is to the left which I think captures what I was looking for exactly.

So far we have had a limited run of shirts produced featuring the cartoon on the front and the company logo on the reverse. These have gone to all the staff and board members and I confidently expect to see them making an appearance at the summer barbecue in a few weeks time!

Successful completion of KTP project

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

A couple of years ago AppSwing began a project in conjunction with Reading University as part of a government backed scheme called the Knowledge Transfer Partnership. This scheme places a recent graduate with a company to deliver a specific project using the knowledge in a partnered university. In our case this completed 31st July and I am happy to announce that Daniel Phipps has joined the company on a permament basis.

Dan will be a great asset to the business and the fruits of his labours over the last two years will see the light of day in the next relase of AES in October. This is a very significant release for us more about which I will post details of closer to the release date.

I welcome Dan to AppSwing and look forward to seeing him continue to innovate as he has over the last two years.Â

Today AppSwing are releasing some applications that we had written for our clients but could be useful for others too so you can now download them from our site. What the apps do is allow you to put an icon on the desktop of your device (either BlackBerry or Windows Mobile) and have it redirect to a fixed URL when started. Not earth shattering but still very useful and saving a few clicks which is all important on a small screen device.

You can get more information and download from the following link: http://www.appswing.com/ota

Mobile Working Survey

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

AppSwing are interested to know if your company is already getting the benefits of mobile working or if you haven’t already implemented, when and if you plan to. We are currently running what will become an annual mobile working survey. With no more than six questions from start to finish it isn’t very onerous and for completing it you could win a BlackBerry Curve courtesy of RIM.

If you haven’t already done so you can enter here results will be published in the Autumn.

A STEP up

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

For the second year AppSwing is taking part in a scheme that sees university students placed with industry for eight weeks during the summer. The scheme is great from us as it allows the business to take a look at things that we might not otherwise get time to look at.

Last year we had two students with us. One who produced what is now released as AppSwing Management Console and the other produced a proof of concept for a product that is to be released this October. This year Peter Bodin is with us and is working on a POC for another long term project.

For the student not only does it give them some funds over the summer but also allows them to see what it is really like to work in a development environment. Every student that passes through the company is subject to the same processes and procedures as any other member of the team and is mentored during the period to ensure that they get the most out of the experience.

It has been good for both company and individual and I would thoroughly recommend it. We have so far only taken IT students but they could be from any discipline.

New AppSwing website

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

You may have noticed that we have recently relaunched the AppSwing website, given it a bit of a makeover and refreshed the content. Why did we feel that this was necessary? Well every once in a while it is, I believe, important to check that your shopfront window is still eye catching and relevant. Also we wanted to ensure that everyone knew that AppSwing were not only about mobility but about providing access to your applications by a variety of methods including web services, messaging solutions and mobile devices.

Browser Auto Detection

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Previously detecting a user’s browser was important because of the differences in the way that Internet Explorer and Netscape rendered HTML and so the “experience” you get could be different for the same site. At least that was the reason so many people worried about it. Now that Internet Explorer commands over 90% of the browser market it is hardly worth worring about. Unless you are a Firefox fanatic of course…

However, there are other reasons for detecting a user’s browser, such as redirecting to a different site or set of pages for a device such as a PDA or a Smartphone. This is what we needed to do at AppSwing and what I wanted to achieve on this site.

Device Agnostic

Monday, April 17th, 2006

One of the things that AppSwing prides itself on is that it’s customers are able to run their business applications on the web browser of ANY connected device. This is a pretty bold statement to make but something that we believe is important to ensure that customers can get the benefits of:

  • no client software to install on the device
  • being able to use mixed devices within the organisation
  • a future proofed solution, no matter what comes next

And when we say “any device” we mean any device. I cannot quite image a business that would have the Sony PSP as their device of choice but, as you can see from the screenshots below it would be perfectly possible.
