Thames Valley Innovation Conference

Friday, August 31st, 2007

This October AppSwing will be taking part in the Thames Valley Innovation Conference, an event for businesses, innovators, advisors and investors looking to pick up new ideas, learn about new approaches to innovation and hear from innovation leaders. Over 600 delegates are expected to attend, drawn from innovative or technology companies.

I attended last year as a delegate and there were some really interesting sessions so I am looking forward to being part of it in 2007. This year AppSwing will have a stand in the Innovation Showcase where we will be demonstrating AppSwing Design Studio publicly for the first time. This is a drag and drop tool that allows partners to quickly create mobile interfaces from existing applications.

I will also be presenting a couple of times during the day. Firstly to talk about the recently completed KTP project and the impact that has had on the business and secondly about R&D in a small business.

The event is free so if you are interested in seeing some innovative companies, including AppSwing, register now.
You can download the conference flyer from here.

Opportunities in India

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

It seems that the market for mobile working in India is looking pretty compelling after Nokia announced that it is now it’s second biggest market (by sales) beating even the US. The largest market though is China.

Unauthorised wi-fi access

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

It has been reported that a man has been arrested on suspicion of unauthorised access to a neighbours wireless internet connection. There are a couple of points about this story. The first is that there are still people around who have not secured their wireless connection, either because they feel it is not necessary or don’t know how. The second point is the implication for business. With more and more devices becoming wi-fi enabled and more businesses wanting to take advantage of this as a way to reduce costs, how do you ensure that your staff remain legal? Education is a start but the only effective way is to employ device management to ensure that employees cannot tamper with settings, such as authorised access point, on their devices.

AppSwing Summer Do 2007

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Each year AppSwing has a summer event for all the employees and their families. It’s a chance to relax and unwind, although that was more difficult this year as the gathering included five children under five! Still easier than next year I suspect when there will be seven under five! Of course the kids were the centre of attention and that is reflected in the pictures of the event. Next year we hope the sun will shine and we can get outdoors and play some games.

For people on the move

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

For people on the moveA good friend of mine, Jim Bamber, is a renowned cartoonist specialising in all things motorsport. You can see his work in Autosport magazine every week. So when I wanted someone to do a cartoon for a tee shirt we were having produced Jim was the ideal candidate.

Jim was given a very loose brief. I knew I wanted something jokey and eye catching based on a theme of mobility. The design Jim came up with is to the left which I think captures what I was looking for exactly.

So far we have had a limited run of shirts produced featuring the cartoon on the front and the company logo on the reverse. These have gone to all the staff and board members and I confidently expect to see them making an appearance at the summer barbecue in a few weeks time!

Successful completion of KTP project

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

A couple of years ago AppSwing began a project in conjunction with Reading University as part of a government backed scheme called the Knowledge Transfer Partnership. This scheme places a recent graduate with a company to deliver a specific project using the knowledge in a partnered university. In our case this completed 31st July and I am happy to announce that Daniel Phipps has joined the company on a permament basis.

Dan will be a great asset to the business and the fruits of his labours over the last two years will see the light of day in the next relase of AES in October. This is a very significant release for us more about which I will post details of closer to the release date.

I welcome Dan to AppSwing and look forward to seeing him continue to innovate as he has over the last two years.Â
